Ancient pre-Hispanic cultures viewed music and sound as one unified form to be used in daily life and rituals, and were meant to emulate nature and even the supernatural; in a sense, they were the original sound designers. Drawing inspiration from this, the sound and music team behind 'Shadow of the Tomb Raider' worked together to blur the lines of what is traditionally seen as music and sound design to create a unique and unified approach, while using the very instruments and techniques that these ancient cultures used. Be prepared to be immersed, inspired and surprised in this journey into the heart of the sound of 'Tomb Raider'.
Attendees will learn about the collaborative and open working methods between the music and sound teams, as well as a great deal of insight into the uses and meanings of sound and music in pre-Hispanic cultures, and the impact this had on both the sound design vision, and music direction.
The talk is aimed at a general audience with specific interest in video game music, high-level direction, composition and integration techniques. The audience will also benefit from a perspective of music and cultural history and how this approach can influence video game creation and production.
