Puzzles are integrated into many games both digital and analog, but designing a great puzzle can be an elusive challenge: too easy bores the player, too hard frustrates them. With the rising popularity of escape rooms and similar digital VR experiences, puzzles can often be the core of the gameplay. In this session, each panelist will present a case study of how they teach puzzle design at their institution, using real-world examples from students and/or professional work. This talk will discuss challenges and best practices specific to teaching puzzle design, and predict the future of puzzles in game design.

Takeaway

Attendees will leave the session with detailed knowledge of pitfalls and best practices related to teaching puzzle design. Through case studies and real-world examples, attendees gain insight into how three top educators integrate puzzle design into their programs, and how to employ it at their own institutions.

Intended Audience

Anyone is welcome to attend this panel, and no prerequisite knowledge is required! Educators interested in integrating puzzle design into their curriculum will particularly benefit, as well as anyone interested in puzzle design professionally, especially in the escape room genre (both physical and digital/VR) or other puzzle-focused genres.
