Audience Level: All

Without emotion there is no game. This talk demonstrates how to model AI after emotion-creating structures used in popular films. Together, you will unpack the stage mechanics from 4 popular films (such as The Matrix and the Shape of Water) and 4 popular games (such as 'Assassin’s Creed Odyssey' and 'Lone Echo') to explore new opportunities for AI beyond branching narrative, dialog mazes, and believable NPCs. Like a film, every layer of your AI must resonate with emotion.Come see how The Hunger Games inspired 'Fortnight' / 'Battle Royale' and how these and future AI techniques enhance emotions, multiplayer, and replayability.

Takeaway

Attendees walk away with 12 techniques for framing new approaches to Narrative AI beyond branching narrative. Each technique offers a unique angle on creating player emotion, many of them independent of player’s actual choices in the game. Additionally, this session will offer inspiration on future opportunities for AI mechanics to enhance these effects.

Intended Audience

Programmers and designers of all experience levels interested in expanding traditional applications of AI to new areas of gameplay. Especially relevant for developers interested in offering the emotional range and depth of film, while maintaining the compelling player agency of games.
