Neuropathic pain is a debilitating form of chronic pain that is associated with decreased quality of life, depression, drug abuse and suicidal risk. It affects 48 million people worldwide. There is emerging evidence to suggest that virtual reality may be a viable, low-cost and low-risk therapy for treating and managing neuropathic pain. This presentation will detail some of the ways that virtual reality environments are being developed and validated as therapies for chronic pain rehabilitation for people with spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, diabetes and HIV.
Following this presentation, attendees will get a working explanation of the neurophysiology underlying how virtual reality therapy can create substantive brain changes in users. They will also gain insights into the design of virtual reality environments that can produce pain-relieving responses in people who are living with chronic pain.
The intended audience for this presentation is general. There will be no prerequisite knowledge required to follow the content. It is most likely to be of interest to people who have an interest in understanding how to use technology for therapeutic, medical and humanitarian causes.
