Baobab embraces VR as a powerful storytelling medium where they place users inside the story and give them the opportunity to interact. However, blending interactivity with a tightly-crafted narrative typically exposes competing and conflicting goals. On 'Crow: The Legend' they treat their “interactions as narrative”: the interactive progression has a beginning, middle, and end that underscores the overarching story arc. Each interactive beat also has a beginning, middle, and end. They combine the role of the user with a simple, extensible core mechanic to weave interactivity with narrative. In this session, the Baobab team presents an interactive musical montage through space as a case study.

Takeaway

Attendees will take away a high-level understanding of the challenges and opportunities of creating more immersive and intuitive interactive narrative experiences for VR/AR from the unique perspective of an indie animation studio comprised of tech, gaming and entertainment talent.

Intended Audience

No specific prerequisites of role, discipline or even industry. Whether working in games or movies, this panel is meant for any creator who is interested in building the future of immersive storytelling with a passion for the VR/AR technology that will enable it.
