The most important tool a designer possesses is a pencil, enabling translation of ideas into 2D sketches that will ultimately become 3D models. McLaren has fast-tracked this process by introducing a unique VR sketch tool into their studio. Vector Suite allows the designer to sketch directly into 3D, creating initial design concepts then enabling accurate design changes on the fly, all done in an immersive VR environment. These functions were all imperative to the success of the tool. The session will demonstrate the challenges and results of 18 months of research and development, literally changing the way McLaren designs cars.

A typical automotive design process takes 2 to 3 weeks to transform a 2D sketch into a robust 3D volume model. You will see a live demonstration, showing the initial concept creation, the fine-tuning of the design and the surface creation of a 3D Supercar, created in 10 minutes!

Intended Audience

All designers can benefit from this tool: transportation, product, architecture and many others. The pared back, intuitive nature of the tool makes it perfect for creating 3D sketch concept models quickly, that can then be evaluated by designers and decision makers
