Prior to 'Marvel’s Spider-Man', Insomniac worked on numerous action games: 'Ratchet & Clank', 'Sunset Overdrive' and 'Resistance' to name a few. They thought they knew how to make combat and could hit the ground running. They were wrong. This will be a discussion of the largest problems and changes that were made to Insomniac’s AI during the development of 'Marvel’s Spider-Man'.

Takeaway

The audience will leave with an understanding of how the Insomniac team solved several real-world problems that will be relevant to character action games. They will have enough knowledge to begin the development of systems and features necessary to empower the player while increasing iteration productivity through data-driven design.

Intended Audience

Any AI programmer, gameplay programmer or game designer focused on navigation and/or fight behavior systems.
