Ilja Rotelli has spent the last 25+ years in competitive gaming, originally as a pro player and soon after as esport and community head at Wizards of the Coast, Blizzard Entertainment and Riot Games. In the past 10 years he focused on changing the role of game publishers in esports from defensive IP holders to active promoters, creating the World Championship Series for 'StarCraft II', and developing college and grass-roots play for 'League of Legends'. This talk is an anthology of the lessons learned in competitive experience design, from the early days of tabletop card tournaments to the modern video game stages, to inspire the next generation of esport titles.

Takeaway

Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the importance of competitive experience design and ecosystem management in the context of games as a service. They’ll be able to reflect on what it means to design for the full player experience, and what kind of organization and game features it takes to build an esport as a deliberate act, rather than stumble into it.

Intended Audience

Game designers, esports professionals, game directors, and anyone who loves esports and would like to dive deeper in the DNA of modern competitive play.
